No on Measures A, B;
yes on C
As the June election
approaches, voters will have to think about two issues, like it or
not - growth and land use.
Measure C, the Plan for the People, brings together the groups that
make up Monterey County- residents, farmers and ranchers, affordable
housing and social justices advocates, hospitality and organized
labor.
I'm sure my late husband, Sam Karas, would approve of Measure C. As
a county supervisor in both the 4th and 5th districts, Same worked
for and loved the whole county. I was born 86 years ago in Monterey
and share his vision.
I cannot support Measures A or B, especially A. It is unfair to
allow Peninsula voters to decide growth and land use for north
county and south county
communities. Measure A does just that.
In 1982, a county general plan was approved to curb excessive
growth. A case in point: Carmel Valley grew from 781 housing units
in 1955 to 5,300 units in 1986. From 1986 to 2005, only 396 units
were added.
The supervisors then
knew what they were doing. If you care about Monterey County, vote
"no" on Measures A and B, and "yes" on Measure C.
