Don't be fooled
Measure A is wrong for Monterey County. The claims in favor lack
credibility. One supporter claimed that the competing Measure C will
consume 25,000 acres of farmland for 21,000 housing units or in
excess of one acre per house. Most of the housing units are planned
for Fort Ord, Prunedale, Pine Canyon and Bradley, where there is
little or no agriculture. Providing
housing for farmworkers near their work makes sense. Most of the new
jobs are in South County, so why restrict housing to the north?
Agriculture and tourism employers who compete in a low-wage industry
must be concerned with the availability of close affordable housing
and they
can't rely on government subsidized urban area housing.
The supervisors have compromised on Rancho San Juan to avoid a $200
million lawsuit on the takings clause of the Fifth Amendment. They
deserve our support. Don't be fooled: Vote no on A and B and yes on
C and D.
