No centrist majority

I've read many arguments against both Measure A and the supervisors' initiative, GPU4. You know what?

They're all good arguments! It is thus clear to me that neither initiative has captured the passion of what could be called a dominant centrist majority.

Understandably, it's not easy to draft a good land-use plan for an area as complex as Monterey County. But the various points that have come up during this election have made it clear to me that the people do not simply want a choice between two extremes.

My recommendation therefore is to reject both initiatives (vote no, yes, no, no), essentially telling the supervisors to come up with a new and better-written plan that accommodates the reasonable wishes of a democratic majority rather than those of one extreme or another.

If the present group of supervisors can't do this, they can easily be replaced at election time by a new group that can.
