No on Measure A
The U.S. Constitution is known as the "Great Compromise," not
because we as a people compromised any great principle but because
we compromised our partisan interests for the sake of our common
interests.
On the upcoming ballot, Monterey County's general plan is the
subject of three measures. Contrary to what supporters of Measure A
would have voters believe, the plan approved by the Board of
Supervisors was developed by a committee of citizens. This committee
included diverse interests such as homeowners, renters, business
owners, unions, environmentalists, farmers, etc. As with the
delegates to the Constitutional Convention, this committee knew that
it needed to compromise partisan interests for the sake of common
interests.
It is important to note that LandWatch member Gary Patton was on
this committee but resigned. Subsequent to resigning, he criticized
the committee for not including an environmental perspective. Quite
disingenuous.
Measure A supporters say "let the voters decide." This suggests our
citizens had nothing to do with developing the general plan that the
Board of Supervisors approved. Nothing could be further from the
truth. Vote no of Measure A.
